“I reckon I’ll handle this all by myself,” Jack announced.

Merle shook her head.

“You’re not thinkin’, Jack,” she said. “You’ve been seen in that town. Somebody is bound to remember you askin’ after Dave Flynn.”

“I was real careful, Merle,” Jack assured her.

“Doesn’t matter,” the woman said dismissively. “This time, it’s between Frank and Wes.”

“I’ll do it,” Wes said quickly.

“No, I will,” Frank scowled.

In the end, they flipped a coin. Frank won the toss.

Jack was still prepared to argue.

“You all know I got the fastest draw,” he boasted.

“What difference does that make?” Merle sniffed. “This isn’t gonna be a shootin’ contest . . .”
