“Well, you’re right about me goin’ after Doug,” he said finally.

“I know it,” the girl nodded. “And I’m going with you. It’s the only way to save the man I love.”

“Love?” Tauber jeered. “Doug doesn’t even know what the word means! If you want to know about hate, well that’d be different. He’d be the man to talk to then. Doug’s a real expert when it comes to hate.”

“Just like you, Farley?” Cynthie asked slowly. “You should see how your face changes when you say his name.”

Tauber paused before responding, trying to sort out his true feelings about Doug Prince. He had never put it into words before.

“You could be right,” he said. “If there’s anybody I oughtta hate, it’s Doug.”

“Enough to want him dead?”

He shook his head, suddenly saddened.

“No, not that much . . .”
