“You’d think we was important, the way he keeps after us,” Binder said. “Hell, all we done was rob that store.”

He was conceding the sad fact that they were not notorious desperadoes — only low-grade scum.

“I’d say you made us important, when you killed that storekeeper,” Shelley scowled.

They bickered over whose fault it was for awhile. Then Shelley said that the only sensible thing to do was to gun down the ranny on the black horse.

“Thought you was chewin’ me out for shootin’ that storekeeper,” Binder reminded him. “Now you want me to gun down somebody else.”

“One more won’t matter now,” Shelley grunted. “They c’n only hang us once.”
